Mental Health & Emotional Wellbeing

Children and young people's mental health and emotional wellbeing

At St Thomas' we are committed to supporting the positive mental health and wellbeing of our whole school community.  We recognise that mental health and emotional wellbeing is just as important to our lives as physical health.

We endeavour to ensure that children are able to manage times of stress and change. We aim to ensure that they are supported to reach their potential or access help when they need it.  We also have a role in ensuring that children learn;

  • How to identify a range of feelings and how these are expressed, including words to describe them and simple strategies for managing feelings
  • How to recognise different types of teasing and bullying and understand that these are wrong and unacceptable
  • To identify an enjoyable form of physical activity, understanding why it is important to be physically active
  • How to communicate about feelings, to recognise how others show feelings and now how to respond
  • That feelings change and that not everyone experiences the same feeling in the same situation
  • To develop a positive sense of self
  • To know what it means to have self-esteem
  • What resilience is and how it helps people
  • To recognise and respond to a wide range of emotions in themselves and others and ways to respond
  • About mental health; what it means and how we can take care of it
  • About how feelings and emotions are affected and can be managed at changing, challenging or difficult times

Here we will share information which may be helpful for children, parents & carers and also links to websites which also be of help.

St Thomas' Mental Health & Wellbeing Lead is Mrs Carol Gardiner, if you would like to speak to Mrs Gardiner, please contact the school office via telephone or email.
